Elena Cabrera Vacas, the fifth Bakema Fellow, gave a lecture and a presentation at the NAI where she exposed the results of her one-year analysis about two Spanish mass tourism destinations: Benidorm (the 'vertical city') and Marbella (the horizontal 'sprawl'); two dissimilar urban models which have made mass tourism possible on account of the construction boom and Real Estate speculation. This research focused on the understanding of the urban process that took place in both places, linking it with the tourist phenomenon and the political scene.
